Instructions for the construction of the Tabernacle, its furnishings, and the priestly garments, as well as the eventual realization of these instructions. The amount of instructions here and Leviticus are overwhelming and intensive. We must keep this in mind when we suppose that Christ's yoke is hard to endure. The glory of the cross and having Christ as Lord is the better part.

Exodus 27

  • Instructions are given for building the altar of burnt offering from acacia wood and bronze.
  • Directions for the courtyard of the Tabernacle include detailed measurements and materials.
  • Commandments specify the use of pure olive oil for the lampstand that Aaron and his sons must keep burning from evening until morning.

Exodus 28

  • Details for the priestly garments to be worn by Aaron and his sons are described, including the ephod, the breastplate of judgement, and other holy garments.
  • The breastplate is to hold twelve precious stones, each engraved with the name of one of the tribes of Israel. The Urim and Thummim, tools for supernatural decision making, are to be placed in the breastplate.

Exodus 29

  • Instructions for the consecration of Aaron and his sons as priests are given: this includes animal sacrifices and the application of blood on the altar, Aaron, and his sons.
  • Directions for the daily offerings to be made on the altar of burnt offering.

Exodus 30

  • God details the construction of the incense altar and its placement.
  • The Israelites are commanded to pay a census tax for the service of the Tabernacle.
  • Recipes and uses for the holy anointing oil and the incense to be used in the Tabernacle are outlined.

Exodus 31

  • Bezalel and Oholiab are named as the chief craftsmen for the construction of the Tabernacle.
  • Israelites are again instructed to observe the Sabbath as a sign of their covenant with the Lord.
  • Exodus 31:18 "And he gave to Moses, when he had finished speaking with him on Mount Sinai, the two tablets of the testimony, tablets of stone, written with the finger of God."

Exodus 32

  • The story of the golden calf: while Moses is receiving the law, the people build an idol from their gold, leading to Moses’ anger and the breaking of the tablets. Notice Aaron blaming the people. We must do what is right, no matter the pressure we may endure.
  • Moses (love, care, compassion) intercedes with God to prevent His wrath from destroying the people.
  • The Levites rally to Moses and slay many of the people as a punishment for the idolatry.

Exodus 33

  • God informs Moses that He will not travel amongst the Israelites because they are stiff-necked, but Moses pleads with God.
  • God relents somewhat and agrees to let His presence go with Moses.
  • Moses asks to see God’s glory; God agrees to pass by Moses, but says that His face cannot be seen.

Exodus 34

  • Moses makes new tablets, ascends Mount Sinai again, and God rewrites the commandments.
  • God makes a covenant with the Israelites, renewing the promises and stating the laws.
  • Moses returns from the mountain with a radiant face after speaking with God.

Exodus 35

  • Moses gathers all the Israelites to command them to keep the Sabbath and to request offerings for the construction of the Tabernacle. The people gave generously.
  • The community brings generous offerings; Bezalel, Oholiab, and other skilled workers begin the work.

Exodus 36

  • The people bring more than enough materials, and work on the Tabernacle begins with the various curtains and frames.

Exodus 37

  • Bezalel constructs the Ark of the Covenant, the table for the bread of the Presence, the golden lampstand, and the incense altar.

Exodus 38

  • Construction of the altar of burnt offering, the bronze basin, and the courtyard is detailed.
  • The accounting of the materials used for the Tabernacle is given.

Exodus 39

  • The priestly garments are made, as previously detailed in chapter 28.
  • Once completed, everything is brought to Moses, who inspects the work and blesses it.

Exodus 40

  • The Tabernacle is erected and arranged on the first day of the first month.
  • Moses anoints and consecrates the Tabernacle and all its furnishings.
  • Aaron and his sons are anointed and consecrated to serve as priests.
  • The glory of the Lord fills the Tabernacle, and God's presence is represented by a cloud over the Tabernacle by day and fire by night, guiding the Israelites through their journey.

This concludes the book of Exodus, depicting the establishment of the central place of worship (all of life is a type of worship, but separate worship h where nothing else detracts from our focus on Him always been a part of God's will) for the Israelites and the reaffirmation of the covenant between God and His people, along with the prescribed practices of worship.

Romans 9:4 (ESV) They are Israelites, and to them belong the adoption, the glory, the covenants, the giving of the law, the worship, and the promises.
